Fire officials say a 7-year-old started a fire that caused extensive damage to a relative’s house. The Providence Journal reported that firefighters were dispatched to a two-story, single-family house at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Five adult residents had already left the house, along with a relative and her 7-year-old, who were visiting. The deputy assistant fire chief said the fire was mostly contained to the basement, where it started. The newspaper reported that a preliminary investigation showed that the boy set a fire with matches under the stairs leading to the first floor. He was referred to a juvenile arson intervention program.
