Cranston gets $3.4m from US to hire 20 firefighters

The city of Cranston is getting $3.45 million in federal funds to hire and train new firefighters. Officials said the funding through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, or SAFER, grant program will help the department bring on 20 new firefighters at the city’s six stations. They are expected to be assigned to the fire and emergency medical services divisions. Members of the state’s congressional delegation and Mayor Allan Fung announced the funding Thursday.
