New covered bridge opens to traffic

A new bridge that replaces a covered bridge destroyed by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Irene has opened in Vermont. The bridge in Quechee was destroyed in August 2011, and a replacement span has been under construction since late summer. Governor Peter Shumlin attended Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the new Quechee bridge, which crosses the Ottauquechee River. The Valley News reported that several hundred people came to the new bridge Saturday as it opened to traffic, with Shelly Yusko of Quechee being the first resident to drive her vehicle across it. The bridge is a key link to the village. Final construction will be finished in the spring.
