Deadline nears for Sandy disaster assistance

Time is running out for Rhode Islanders affected by Hurricane Sandy who plan to apply for federal disaster assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said applicants for assistance must register before Jan. 14. FEMA coordinating officer James Russo said residents who experienced losses in the storm should register even if they are not sure they qualify for assistance. More than 500 households have registered for assistance so far, according to FEMA. They have received more than $800,000 in grants and loans to pay for repairs, rent, medical bills, and other expenses.
