Vt. officials oppose fine for out-of-bounds skiing

It looks as if legislation to impose a fine on people who deliberately ski outside resort boundaries, get lost, and require rescue is not going to pass the Vermont Legislature this year. That was the consensus of the Vermont Senate Judiciary Committee after top law enforcement officials, a ski industry leader, and the author of a book on backcountry skiing testified Tuesday that the fines are a bad idea. Senator Kevin Mullin, a Republican who proposed the measure, pointed to a spate of recent rescues at the Killington-Pico ski area. But critics do not want to discourage backcountry skiing, saying it is a big source of growth in the ski industry.
