The water main break in Inman Square in Cambridge was brought under control by 8 p.m., Cambridge police reported tonight.

Police said on their official Twitter account that water was shut off at that time.

However, traffic continues to be impacted and people are still being urged to avoid the area if they can.

“Broadway is now open,’’ police wrote in a tweet. “Inman Street from Broadway to Harvard Street is still closed.’’

The cause of the break and the number of people impacted by it was not immediately available. The water main break was first reported around 6:45 p.m. An official at the city’s Department of Public Works gave the location as 51 Inman St.

Earleir tonight, James O’Keefe, a Somerville resident who drove by the scene shortly before 6 p.m., estimated that the flooding extended several hundred feet down the street.

“It didn’t look like it was high enough to harm anyone’s car,” he said. “It was a lot of water.”

Cambridge City Councillor Tim Toomey reported via Twitter that the break occurred outside the City Hall annex.
