Maine House OK’s 18-plus rule for tanning salons

The Maine House has joined the Senate in approving a bill that would prohibit tanning facilities and their operators from allowing youths who have not turned 18 from using tanning devices. After a debate in which supporters warned of the health risks of tanning beds, representatives voted 82 to 63 to give the bill preliminary approval. The Senate endorsed the bill last week, leaving only final votes in each chamber for the bill to be sent to the governor. Research has shown that high-risk exposure to ultraviolet light happens more commonly in teenagers and that overexposure during childhood increases the chances of skin cancer later in life.
