Deerfield Academy finds teacher misconduct
An independent investigation determined that a longtime former teacher at Deerfield Academy had sexual contact with at least one student, the school said in an e-mail.
The Western Massachusetts prep school disclosed in late January that an alumnus had come forward with allegations that Peter Hindle, who taught math from 1956 to 2000, had sexual contact with him.
In Saturday’s e-mail message, Head of School Margarita Curtis said lawyers concluded that Hindle performed sexual acts with the student on at least eight occasions.
Hindle did not return a call seeking comment Saturday night.
Curtis said Hindle confirmed one instance of sexual contact prior to the January announcement, but claimed it occurred against his will.
Investigators also uncovered allegations that another teacher, Bryce Lambert, who retired in 1990 and has died, had sexual contact with two students years apart, Curtis said.
“The investigation also led us to the conclusion that the Deerfield administration in the 1980s could have — in the case of Peter Hindle — moved more forcefully to address reports of inappropriate behavior,” Curtis said.
The school’s board of trustees decided to bar Hindle from campus events.
