State graduates new class of rookie firefighters

Dozens of rookie firefighters will be working in fire departments across Massachusetts after graduating recently from the state’s firefighting academy in Stow. State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said the 68 new firefighters, all men, represent 40 local fire departments. Their 12-week training program involved classroom instruction, physical fitness training, and practice putting out fires. Students also had to demonstrate proficiency in skills including search and rescue and ladder and pump operations. Marshfield Fire Chief Kevin Robinson addressed graduates at the ceremony, speaking about the successful rescue of a firefighter who became trapped in a structural collapse last year.
