Boy who drowned was Lowell teenager

The student who drowned in a Greater Lowell Technical High School pool Tuesday was a 15-year-old from Lowell, authorities said.

Tyngsborough police said Danny Svay was found unresponsive just before noon Tuesday and pulled from the bottom of the pool at the school, which is in Tyngsborough. Emergency personnel performed CPR and then transported Svay to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Tyngsborough Police Department and Massachusetts State Police Department are conducting the investigation, Tyngsborough police said.

An autopsy will be conducted by the state’s chief medical examiner to determine Svay’s cause of death, according to a spokeswoman in the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office.

Svay’s death appears to be accidental, the district attorney’s office said.

“The Greater Lowell family is deeply saddened by Tuesday’s tragic event,” read a message posted on the high school’s website.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Danny Svay.”

Members of Svay’s family declined to comment Wednesday night.
