Maine governor accuses union of lying

Governor Paul LePage has accused the Maine State Employees Association of trying to scare people with talk of a possible government shutdown. The union representing state workers warned in a letter May 6 that agencies have been directed to prepare plans ‘‘for an inevitable shutdown.’’ The blunt-speaking Republican governor met with union representatives Monday and said he told the union’s chief counsel that ‘‘you are lying.’’ LePage said there is no secret plan to prepare for a shutdown in the event legislators and the governor fail to agree on a budget plan. He said that if the Legislature fails to adopt his budget, then the union should talk to lawmakers, not to him.
