Areas along Rhode Island’s southern shore that were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy are hurrying to complete repairs ahead of the summer tourist season. In the Misquamicut community in Westerly, hundreds of residents, schoolchildren, and business owners gathered on the beach Friday to link hands in an event marking the recovery from the storm. When the storm hit in October it washed away hundreds of tons of beach sand, and flooded businesses and homes. Frank Labriola is a co-owner at Paddy’s Beach Restaurant and Resort, which was badly damaged. With repairs almost complete, he’s vowing to be open in time for the crowds of tourists who flock to the beach every summer.
