An Essex County jury acquitted a Salem police lieutenant Friday of rape and indecent assault and battery, the district attorney’s office confirmed. Prosecutors had alleged that Lieutenant Matthew Desmond assaulted a woman in June of last year. His lawyer, Thomas Drechsler, said Friday that Desmond was “very happy” with the verdict and will seek reinstatement to his job and back pay, which he is entitled to by law. Desmond had been suspended without pay, Drechsler said.
