Providence seeking federal money for streetcars

Providence is seeking $39 million in federal funding to help pay for a planned streetcar system that would run from College Hill near Brown University to south Providence near Rhode Island Hospital. WPRI-TV reported that the money is being sought in a grant proposal through the federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program. The rest of the money for the project would come through city and state bonding and more than $5 million in additional federal money for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.
