Vermont’s largest city now has about 700 parking meter signs in French and English. Vermont Public Radio reported that the project is a result of a resolution of ‘‘French friendliness’’ passed recently by the Burlington City Council and intended to make French-Canadian tourists feel more welcome. Councilor Norm Blais said it is the continuation of an effort that began at the airport to increase bilingual signage. He said the French language has a unique and important place in Burlington.
