R.I. lawmakers debate increasing marriage fee by $46

Getting married in Rhode Island would cost an extra $46, under a bill approved by the state Senate Judiciary Committee. The panel approved the bill Thursday. Local government officials are among supporters of the proposal. The Providence Journal reported that the bill would add a $46 surcharge to the current $24 cost of getting a marriage license. Two dollars of the new fee would go to the city or town clerk and the other $44 would go to the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
