Woman thrown from vehicle on I-495 in Merrimac

A woman was seriously injured Sunday afternoon after she was thrown from a vehicle traveling on Interstate 495 and driven by a man who is facing drunk driving charges, authorities said. Henry Matos, 45, of Lawrence, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, State Police said in a statement. Another Lawrence man, Moises Matos, 43, was taken into protective custody. The woman, suffering serious injuries, was taken by ambulance to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport and later by helicopter to a Boston hospital, the statement said. Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, State Police received numerous reports of a woman being thrown from a moving vehicle on I-495 northbound in Merrimac, south of Broad Street, Troopers stopped the vehicle on I-495 southbound, south of a highway rest area in Merrimac. State Police and the Essex County District Attorney’s office are investigating, the statement said.
