Foster-Glocester schools chief gets top honor

The head of the Foster-Glocester school district has been named superintendent of the year in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island School Superintendents’ Association said Michael Barnes was selected as the 2014 superintendent of the year for outstanding achievement in district leadership, dedication to educating all children, and community commitment. He received the award Wednesday. Barnes has been superintendent of the regional school district since 2008 and was assistant superintendent from 2005 to 2008. Before that, he was on the faculty at the Ponaganset Middle School and high school in the technology department, serving for a time as department chairman.
