A 27-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to a charge that he took a 13-year-old girl from Rhode Island to New Jersey for sex in a case that prompted an Amber Alert. Daniel Berger of Haskell, N.J., was indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. The Providence Journal reported that he pleaded not guilty Friday in US District Court in Providence. Authorities said Berger communicated with the Portsmouth girl online, then on July 24 picked her up at her house and drove her to New Jersey. The following day, the girl was found in his home, and he was arrested.
