The family of Jennifer Martel, the young mother stabbed to death in Waltham last week, said they are awaiting the release of her body by state officials in order to make funeral arrangements.

“Right now, we’re not sure when we’ll be able to bury her,” said her uncle, Richard Martel Jr., who is acting as family spokesman, on Sunday.

Jared Remy, the son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, has been charged with fatally stabbing Martel, his longtime girlfriend, Thursday night at their home after an argument.

Martel’s family is also awaiting word on whether they will gain custody of her 4-year-old daughter, who was in the house at the time of the killing.

Cayenne Isaksen, a spokeswoman for the Department of Children and Families, said Sunday afternoon the child was still in the agency’s custody.

She could not comment on whether the agency had any previous dealings with the family or when the child would be released to family members.

“We received the report, and we are investigating,” Isaksen said. “She is in custody, and we’re exploring all options in order to ensure that we keep her best interests in mind when making any decisions going forward.”

The Middlesex district attorney’s office has come under fire because Remy had been released from custody following an alleged domestic violence incident just one day before Martel was killed, even though he has a lengthy criminal record that includes assaults on other women.

Officials have declined to comment on the specific reasons Remy was allowed to return home after allegedly attacking Martel earlier in the week. They also could not say when Martel’s body would be returned to her family.

The Remy family and Jared Remy’s attorney, Peter Bella, did not return calls for comment on Sunday.
