Seven groups vie for charter schools

Seven groups are seeking to open public charter schools in Maine next fall, the Maine Charter School Commission said on Thursday. Applications to the commission are due in December. Legislation currently caps the number of charter schools allowed in Maine at 10. Five charter schools have opened, meaning the seven groups will compete for five remaining spots. The proposals include a charter school in Portland, Lewiston-Auburn, and two state-wide virtual charter schools.
