A third person has been convicted in the fatal shooting of a man driving a minivan in Lawrence nearly five years ago that prosecutors say was a case of retribution. The Eagle-Tribune reported that Joel Javier, 27, was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole this week after being convicted of first-degree murder in the Jan. 10, 2009, shooting of Robert Gonzalez. Javier’s first trial in June ended in a mistrial. Prosecutors said a dispute broke out outside a restaurant in the early morning hours and Javier lost a tooth. Authorities said that later that day, Gonzalez was killed as he was driving a minivan as retribution.
