Vt. hospital investigated after patient found dead

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center officials said the hospital was investigated after two emergency room nurses failed to immediately care for a patient showing no signs of life. A news release from the Bennington hospital Monday said the patient arrived complaining of back pain. Following an initial assessment by nurses, the patient was found dead shortly afterward by a staff member who was not part of the clinical staff. The staff member notified the two nurses who were initially caring for the patient; neither responded. A physician was alerted to the death by another nurse. The cause is unknown.
