The student was taken by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital but died of his injuries. Four other freshmen in the car were also taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where they were treated and released. University president Ronald Machtley identified the student killed as Christiano Barbosa. In an e-mail to students and staff, Machtley said, ‘‘Our hearts go out to Christiano’s family and friends, and to the other students involved in the accident.’’
