Springfield woman, 3 others killed in Conn. crash

A Springfield woman, two of her children, and a Connecticut man were killed in a car crash in Portland, Conn., early Saturday, police said. Another daughter was critically injured.

Police and fire officials pronounced three dead at the scene: Ivette Amaro, 42; her son Pedro Duprey, 24; and Ramon Ruiz, 30, of Hartford, who Cunningham said was not related to the others.

Amaro’s daughter, 20-year-old Andrea Caraballo of Springfield, was pronounced dead at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Conn. Another daughter, Juniarys Caraballo, 18, was in critical condition late Saturday afternoon at Hartford Hospital, said Tina Varona, a hospital spokeswoman.

Because Juniarys Caraballo and Duprey were thrown from the car during the crash, police are not sure who was driving, Cunningham said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, he said.
