Taveras to announce candidacy for governor

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is set to formally kick off his candidacy for governor. The Democratic mayor plans to announce his campaign Monday. He’ll be the first prominent Democrat to enter the race to succeed Governor Lincoln Chafee, who won’t seek a second term in 2014. Democratic state Treasurer Gina Raimondo says she’s also considering a run for governor. The head of the state’s Democratic Party says Clay Pell, grandson of the late US Senator Claiborne Pell, is also mulling a campaign. On the Republican side, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung is expected to run and has an unspecified announcement planned Nov. 4. Moderate Party founder Ken Block has already launched his bid and has said he would consider running as a Republican.
