Steeple removed from burned Burlington church


A steeple destroyed by fire has been removed and dismantled. An Oct. 23 blaze, believed to be arson, caused at least $1 million in damage to the College Street Congregational Church in Burlington. Its mid-19th-century bell tower could not be saved. The Burlington Free Press reported that a crew examined the final steeple section, with remnants of four clock faces, to establish the quickest and safest way to bring it down. A weatherproof cap will protect the church until more permanent repairs are done.
