Vandals defaced historic Plymouth Rock late Monday night, spray painting “lies” on the monument that is symbolic of the Pilgrims’ arrival in America, state park officials say. A state park supervisor washed the paint off Tuesday morning, said Bill Hickey, a spokesman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation. He said vandalism to the monument is not uncommon. “This kind of thing happens two to five times a year,” he said. “It’s just the nature of where it is.” The rock is located in Pilgrim Memorial State Park, near the waterfront in the town of Plymouth.
