Speed called probable cause in fatal Springfield crash

Police have identified a Hampden man who died in a car crash Tuesday as 50-year-old Jeffrey Merigian. Responding officers found a 2013 Cadillac CTS with heavy front end damage on the sidewalk and a snowbank near a restaurant. A large section of the guardrail that was struck was protruding from the front windshield. Officers were not immediately able to get to the driver because of downed power lines. Once it was safe to do so, EMTs checked the driver and pronounced him dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation but police believe speed was a factor.
