New Britain man charged in shooting of dog that attacked child

A man who police say shot and killed his pet dog after it attacked his son has been charged with animal cruelty. New Britain police said they arrested Frank Gavrish over the weekend in the Jan. 14 shooting. Captain Thomas Steck said Gavrish admitted shooting the dog twice after it attacked his child, who received treatment at a hospital for serious injuries. Gavrish was charged with cruelty to animals and unlawful discharge of a firearm. Steck said Monday that if Gavrish had called police, officers could have dealt with the animal in a more humane way.
