The state fire marshal’s office is investigating a fire that killed one person and displaced several others at an apartment complex in Gardner Tuesday night, fire officials said.
One resident, whose identity has not been released, was transported to the city’s Heywood Hospital with fatal injuries.
Firefighters were called at 9:07 p.m. to the three-alarm fire on Lake Street. The fire was contained to an apartment on the third floor. It was extinguished within about 30 minutes, according to Fire Lieutenant Gregory Lagoy, a department spokesman.
The brick and wood structure is a renovated mill building called the Heywood Place Housing Complex.
“At this point, the cause is undetermined, but it is considered accidental,” Lagoy said.
The building’s residents were evacuated during the fire, but a majority of them were returned to their apartments by 3 a.m. today.
“There are several apartments that are uninhabitable right now,” Lagoy said.
The cost of damage to the building was estimated at $175,000.Catalina Gaitan can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow her on Twitter at @catalina_gaitan.
