Cambridge man killed while walking on Route 1 in Saugus

A Cambridge man died after he was struck by a car on Route 1 in Saugus Thursday night, State Police said.

David C. Gartland, 55, was walking in the center lane of the northbound highway at about 8:40 p.m. when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle. He was taken to the North Shore Medical Center Union Hospital in Lynn, where he was pronounced dead.

The operator of the 2003 Nissan XTerra SUV was a 30-year-old Malden man. He reported no injuries. No charges have been filed, State Police said.

A second man, who may have been walking with Gartland, was found about 35 minutes after the crash farther down the highway. The 45-year-old Palmer resident was not injured, but asked to be taken to the hospital to be with Gartland, State Police said.

State Police will continue to investigate the incident. It is not clear why Gartland was walking in the middle of the highway, authorities said.

Saugus police, rescue workers, and Massachusetts Department of Transportation workers responded to the scene. The northbound side of the highway was closed for about 40 minutes, State Police said.
