Drunken-driving arrest is Pembroke man’s 6th

A pickup truck driver was arrested on drunken-driving charges — for the sixth time — after Hingham police pulled him over because of issues with his license plate, authorities said Sunday.

John H. Sweezey, 55, of Pembroke slurred, stumbled, and smelled of alcohol when police stopped his 2004 Chevrolet Silverado Friday night, according to a statement from Hingham police.

Sweezey was at a red light at Whiting and Cushing streets about 10 p.m. Friday when an officer noticed the pickup did not have a front license plate, police said. The rear license plate was listed to a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero, which is a compact car, police said.

He avoided eye contact with the officer, the statement said, and “had slow and slurred speech.”

According to the statement: “His eyes were red and glassy, the front portion of his shirt was wet, and there was an odor of alcohol coming from inside the truck.”

Officers ordered Sweezey to get out of the pickup. And he swayed from side to side and his breath smelled of alcohol when he stepped from the vehicle, police said.

Sweezey denied drinking, saying, according to the statement, “I haven’t drank in 20 years.” And he refused to perform field sobriety tests, police said.

Inside the truck, officers found an empty bottle of Smirnoff Ice between the driver and passenger seats, a brown paper bag holding one full and one empty bottle of Smirnoff Ice, and a cap from a nip bottle, police said.

Police arrested Sweezey, whose Massachusetts driver’s license is suspended, on several charges, including operating under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, and driving with an open container of alcohol.

Sweezey was unable to post the $1,000 bail and was transported to the Plymouth County House of Correction, police said. He will be arraigned Monday at Hingham District Court.

Police said his previous drunken-driving charges include two appearances in Quincy District Court, in 1983 and 1984; two appearances in Hingham District Court, both in 1983; and a 1977 appearance in Taunton District Court.
