UMaine to cut $10m, lay off nonfaculty staff

The University of Maine will cut about $10 million from its annual budget and lay off about seven nonfaculty employees. Officials said Friday that the cuts will not result in layoffs of any faculty members or the elimination of any academic programs. The Portland Press Herald reported that the school will find savings by not filling about 15 faculty positions and by delaying construction projects. The University of Maine System said earlier this month that the schools must cut up to 165 jobs in the coming year to address a $36 million budget shortfall due to flat state funding, declining enrollment, and tuition freezes.
