Salem man accused of attack in Wenham

A Salem man was arrested after he allegedly kidnapped a woman and assaulted her mother in Wenham Friday night, police said.

The mother, 55, called 911 at 10:17 p.m. to say she had been assaulted in her Topsfield Road home by an acquaintance of her 21-year-old daughter’s, Wenham police Sergeant Jon Gray said, and that he had taken her daughter.

“She reported that her daughter had been kidnapped by the suspect, forcibly dragged from the house,” Gray said.

Police found the daughter about two hours later, Gray said. She did not appear to be physically injured, but was taken to Beverly Hospital and later released.

They found the man, 23-year-old Justin Raymond, about 2:30 a.m., hiding in a storage area under the sunroom of a house on nearby Burnham Road.

State Police canine and helicopter units had combed the area with Wenham, Beverly, and Topsfield police searching for the two.

The mother told police that she had been assaulted with a weapon — Gray declined to say what kind. She had minor injuries, Gray said.

Raymond was charged with armed assault and threatening to commit a crime. Gray said police may follow with more charges.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at Ipswich District Court in Newburyport.
