Two charged in beating of cabdriver in Arlington

Two men were arrested for allegedly beating a cabdriver and refusing to pay their $20 cab fare in Arlington Saturday night, Arlington police said in a statement Sunday.

Christopher LaFrance, 25, of Arlington and Jacob Shaps, 24, of Boston were charged with unarmed robbery, intimidation of a witness, and assault and battery.

At 11:36 p.m., when police arrived on the scene in the area of Lowell Street and Park Avenue Extension, the cabdriver reported being assaulted by two customers, police said. The driver told police the men only paid $2 of the $20 fare.

After the driver told them he was calling police, one suspect allegedly punched him and threw the driver’s cellphone out the window, police said.

LaFrance left several cards with his name on them in the back of the cab, and police located his address on Cleveland Street, according to the statement. Police went to the home, identified LaFrance and Shaps, and arrested them.

LaFrance and Shaps are scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Cambridge District Court.
