MBTA to restore weekend commuter rail service

Weekend commuter rail service to points south of Boston will be restored later this year, the state Department of Transportation announced Tuesday. Riders will be able to travel between Boston’s South Station and stops on the Plymouth/Kingston and Greenbush Lines beginning Dec. 27, according to MassDOT. Saturday service on the Needham line will also be restored. The trains are set to run on timetables similar to schedules that were cut over two years ago after cost-saving measures and fare hikes brought on by a transportation reform law.
