Goldberg wins open state treasurer seat

Democrat Deb Goldberg beat out Republican Mike Heffernan, and Green-Rainbow candidate Ian T. Jackson to succeed state Treasurer Steve Grossman, who left office to make an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

The Associated Press called the race shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Goldberg, a former member of the Brookline board of selectmen, said on her website that as treasurer she would “give every woman, every man and every family the financial power and skills they need to get ahead in today’s tough economy.”

Heffernan used television advertising to make a case for himself as a family man with business experience.

Jackson pledged to help build a Massachusetts “which is sustainable in its use of resources, and does not need to sacrifice more of our state parks, or risk any more flooding in coastal cities for short-sighted economic gains.”
