Dramatic video shows vehicle driving off upper deck of I-93

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has released video of a dramatic car crash involving an East Boston man who drove off the upper deck of Interstate 93 in Boston Sunday morning.

Vannak Sao, 33, faces drunken driving charges and has had his license suspended after his pickup truck flew off the deck of I-93 North, State Police said in a statement.

He was driving a 2006 Toyota Tacoma around 6:30 a.m. when he hit a barrier that divides the main highway from the offramp to Route 1. His truck crashed through and “severely damaged” a light pole, a sign for the exit, and six lengths of chain link fence before launching off the upper deck of the expressway and coming to rest on the lower deck, on the southbound side of Interstate 93, according to State Police.

Firefighters rescued Sao and took him to Massachusetts General Hospital, State Police said. He was stabilized at the hospital. He has given several interviews to Boston TV stations, saying he had been drinking and was tired.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Sao was charged with operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, State Police said.

Following the crash, MassDOT deployed crews to clean up debris, salt the roadway in the area, and secure the area around the crash site, the agency said.
