A new law going into effect on Tuesday will require drivers in Massachusetts to use their headlights when windshield wipers are turned on and in times of low visibility.

The law, passed in January, mandates headlight use when "due to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions" visibility is reduced to less than 500 feet or when windshield wipers are needed.

Violations could result in a ticket and insurance surcharge, according to the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents' newsletter.
