Transgender teen who won lawsuit is honored

A transgender teen whose lawsuit over bathroom access went to the Maine Supreme Court is one of several people and organizations honored by the Maine Women's Fund. Nicole Maines, 17, accepted the Samantha Smith Award this week via video from New York, where she is filming an episode of the USA television series ''Royal Pains.'' Maines, now a graduating senior at the Waynflete School in Portland, made history when she sued the Orono school district for requiring her to use a staff bathroom instead of the bathroom of her choice. The Maine Supreme Court ruled that the school's actions against the fifth-grader violated the state's antidiscrimination law.
