Man falls into subway pit at North Station

A man was rescued by firefighters after falling into the Orange Line subway pit at North Station Tuesday morning, officials said.

MBTA spokesman Joseph Pesaturo said in an e-mail that service was shut down for 25 minutes while the man was removed from the pit. He said the man did not make contact with the potentially deadly third rail, which carries the electricity that powers the trains.

“There was no train in the area,’’ Pesaturo wrote in an e-mail.

A Boston Fire department spokesman said firefighters went into the pit around 10:30 a.m. and helped first responders from Boston Emergency Medical Services remove the man from the area. He was taken to a Boston hospital for examination.
