A sinkhole caused by a 10-inch water main break opened up on an East Boston street Monday night, and water is being shut off in the area, the Boston Fire Department said.
Vehicles parked in the area of the sinkhole on Cottage Street were towed, Fire spokesman Steve MacDonald said. There were no vehicles trapped in the sinkhole, and no injuries, he added.
“We’re fortunate we didn’t have to evacuate any homes,” MacDonald said, although water leaked into the basements of some homes.
The sinkhole was 10 feet wide and one-and-a-half feet deep, MacDonald said. He said that crews from the Boston Water and Sewer Commission will continue working on the problem throughout the night.
