Fire burns pick-up truck’s cab in Newton

A fire incinerated the cab of a pick-up truck on Johnson Place in Newton Thursday morning, but no one was injured, according to fire officials.

A resident on the street in Newton’s Auburndale village reported the fire at 9:47 a.m., Fire Lieutenant Eric Fricke said. Newton firefighters were on scene a short time later and had the fire knocked down in 10 minutes.

Officials do not know what caused the fire but Fricke said that the Fire Department does not usually investigate vehicle fires.

“There are so many things that go on in the front end of your automobile,” Fricke said, adding that the fire could have been ignited by an electrical problem, oil leak, or even a lit cigarette.

“We leave it up to the insurance company to determine the cause,” he said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the cab and save the bed of the truck along with some tools in the back. The owner of the vehicle has not been found yet, Fricke said.

Johnson Place is a small street with only about six houses on it, he said.
