Middlebury College inaugurated its 17th president, the first woman to lead the college. Laurie Patton was formally inaugurated on Sunday morning in an outdoor ceremony. Patton became president on July 1. Before moving to Middlebury, she was the dean of Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and a religion professor. Patton is a graduate of Harvard University. She received a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Chicago. She is the editor or author of nine scholarly books on South Asian history, culture, and religion.
