Brandeis faculty petition to join higher education union

More than 200 adjunct and part-time faculty at Brandeis University in Waltham filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday seeking membership in a nationwide union for educators, according to officials.

The move could allow Brandeis faculty to join more than 3,200 Boston-area higher education professionals as members of Faculty Forward, a division of the Service Employees International Union Local 509. The union aims to improve working conditions for non-tenured professors and hold colleges accountable, said SEIU spokesman Jason Stephany.

If the petition is certified by the NLRB, Brandeis faculty will likely vote on joining the union in late November or early December, Stephany said.

Other members of Faculty Forward include educators from Boston, Northeastern, Bentley, and Tufts universities, Stephany said.
