When Valentine’s Day rolled around in 2012, the sign at Sav-Mor Liquors in Somerville said what every person without a date that day may have been thinking: “Valentine’s Day Blah Blah Blah Drink.”

More recently, the sign weighed in on the fall pumpkin spice craze with, “We sell lots of pumpkin crap.”

The witticisms on the sign have been a cherished trademark of the store for years. A sign was once featured on an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Now, for the first time ever, Sav-Mor Liquors, which has stores and signs in Somerville and Medford, is holding a contest, asking customers to come up with their own snappy sayings.

“Come in to any of our stores for a chance to win your slogan on our sign,” the company wrote on Facebook.

The latest displays outside the two stores also entice customers to have a go at humor.

“We want to give someone else the opportunity,” said Michael Weiner, one of the company’s co-owners. “It’s always nice to take a break from having to come up with something witty.”

Robbie Weiner, Michael’s cousin, has been largely responsible for the quips that have appeared on the signs over the last two years.

The company decided to launch the contest after attending a beer-tasting event in Somerville this summer, when someone there expressed interest in taking control of the sign for a day.

“So we thought, ‘You think you can do better?’ Let’s go for it,” Michael Weiner said.

Contestants can submit entries in the stores, or by e-mailing the company at savmorsignsweeps@gmail.com.

The winner of the contest, who will be announced Dec. 1, will have the slogan posted on signs at both store locations, and win a VIP Brewery Experience at the Samuel Adams brewery.

“If you win, you really win,” Weiner said.
