Fresh from a tour around Boston playing Christmas carols for the public, members of the Harvard University Band on Tuesday surprised commuters riding on an MBTA train bound for Harvard Square with some holiday music.

The band boarded the Red Line at Park Street Station, according to one passenger, and began playing festive tunes on tubas, saxophones, and snare drums once they reached Central Square station.

The group continued to entertain commuters until the train reached Harvard Square, where members of the group stepped off.

"I thought maybe something was going on around town, but I looked up and it was the Harvard University marching band," said Alyssa Hassan, who was sitting near the college musicians as they performed. "I turned off my music to listen to them. It was a short performance. Then they just got off."

Hassan said the band put on a low-key performance of "All I Want for Christmas." The train wasn't packed, but Hassan said a few people on her end of the train applauded.
