Inmate, 18, commits suicide at Essex County prison

An 18-year-old inmate took his own life at the Essex County Correctional Facility Wednesday night, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department said.

Corrections officers found Anfelnin Feliz of Lawrence hanging in his cell at the Middleton prison at about 6:20 p.m., Deputy Maurice Pratt said.

The officers rendered first aid and called for medical help, including the Middleton Fire Department, and Feliz was taken to Beverly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Pratt said.

Feliz was being held under pre-trial status for charges including armed robbery, carrying a dangerous weapon, and wanton destruction of property, the deputy said.

The death is under review by the security and investigations team at the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, as well as the Essex district attorney’s State Police detective unit, according to the deputy.

A phone number for Feliz’s family could not be located Wednesday night.
