Two cars collided Tuesday morning as one travelled in the wrong direction on Route 128 in Lexington, according to State Police. Investigators were seeking to determine which of the vehicles was driving against traffic.

The two-car crash took place around 4:15 a.m., and shut down the busy northbound lanes of the highway near Route 3 for nearly two hours as the morning commute began.

A 20-year-old Wayland woman was driving a 2008 Hyundai Accent, and a 27-year-old Dracut man was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Colbalt. Both were seriously injured in the crash and both were taken to the Lahey Clinic in Burlington for treatment, State Police said.

State Police are investigating the incident, and seeking to determine which driver was on the wrong side of the road.

“No charges will be sought until that determination is made,’’ State Police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement.
